Top Trends for your Backyard in 2021

May 26, 2021

With the never-ending Coronavirus cancelling our summer plans, we need a beautiful spot to enjoy the great outdoors right at home. Our backyards (and front yards, too!) are a great place to do this and be safe and socially distanced. Everyone’s getting on the home renovation bandwagon with not much else to do, and our yards are no exception. Here are the top landscaping trends for your backyard in 2021.

Top trends for your backyard in 2021

Low-maintenance

Gardens are always great to look at and can be a soothing, meditative task, but when that task turns to too much work, it loses its appeal quickly. Many homeowners are choosing low-maintenance and easily sustainable landscaping. This means drought-tolerant plants and designs that let plants complement each other (like tomatoes and basil).

Edibles

We all need to save money, and what better way to do so than to grow your own food. Edible gardens consist of fruit, vegetables, herbs, and more and are usually pretty easy to maintain. Who doesn’t love going into the yard and picking a fresh tomato for dinner? If you’re going to start with edible gardening, composting is the next logical step as well. It is a lot easier than you think, great for the environment, gives you free fertilizer for your garden and, doesn’t smell as bad as some might make you think.

Bring the Indoors Outside

With many people working from home, sitting inside a home office when you’ve got a beautiful garden outside seems like quite the waste. Many people are bringing the indoors outside with pergolas and gazebos dressed with curtains, mosquito netting, and privacy trellises. As well, decor items like candles, lanterns, and soft and comfortable textiles make the space seem indoors, while you sit outside.

Outdoor kitchens are also all the rage lately, with everything from BBQ’s with stove elements, refrigerators, and spots to keep your tools and even your condiments. Large islands for parties are a must-have in any outdoor setting. Add an outdoor fireplace and a movie screen and you’re set for never having to go inside (except to use the washroom). The family will love it, and those long Covid days can be spent together enjoying each other’s company instead of wondering what else there is to do.

Feed the Bees

Bees are dying off at an alarming rate, so many Victoria homeowners are adding additions to their garden to help feed the bees and give them a nice place to settle. The first order of business is to use natural pesticides that don’t harm bees. As well, have a diversity of plants that bees like, including local and native plants.

If you’re looking for a home with a great yard for spending time with your family (and your friends when you can!), consult the top realtor in Victoria, BC for more details.
